Zhou Jin, an old lady who lives by a canal in the countryside, is suddenly diagnosed with a brain tumour. On one hand, Her eldest daughter Nianzhen, a determined businesswoman in Shanghai, insists on giving her mother the best treatment, despite facing challenges in her own career and marriage. On the other hand, her youngest son Nianqing, a tour guide who works far from home year-round, believes their mother should live her life naturally and let nature take its course. While the siblings bicker over the best plan, they discover a secret of their mother has been hiding all her life.
Told with artistry and great restraint, the film uses a unique down-to-earth perspective to give deep insights into death, family relations, as well as a reflection of changes in Chinese society over the years.
