Due to limitation in resources, early Chinese animated films were mostly short films. However, animated short films are actually worthy of further exploration in terms of subject matter and technology. For example, the works of Shanghai Animation Film Studio have a diverse range of styles, including hand-drawn animation, puppetry, paper-cut animation and ink animation.

This collection features seven films made by the studio at different stages of the studio’s history. The highlights include two highly artistic ink animation shorts made in the 1960s which received acclaim overseas: Baby Tadpoles Look for Their Mother and The Cowherd’s Flute. Stop-motion animation Mr. Dong Guo and Afanti the Miracle Doctor are visually rich, and the latter was especially popular as part of a franchise. While 36 Characters offer amusing laughs, the soberingly serious Sanmao is an adaptation of a comic book that highlights the hardships of children living in the lower class. Made in 2023, Ship Down the Well is part of the Yao-Chinese Folktales series and a new animation work with a strong artistic style.
